Young NTUC Celebrates!
National Day 2009

This year... It starts with U!

In 2007, Young NTUC together with 8,667 enthusiastic volunteers at the Padang broke the National Record for the largest human Singapore Flag ever. An impressive sea of red and white umbrellas and an even more impressive ocean of happy faces marked Young NTUC’s tribute to our nation’s 42nd birthday.

In 2008, Young NTUC returned to the Padang in an even bigger way with over 11,600 participants breaking not one but two National Records for the largest Day and Night Singapore Flags.

This year in 2009, Young NTUC Celebrates! National Day takes on an even greater significance with the 50th anniversary of self-government for Singapore. Throughout these 50 years, the Labour Movement has played an important role as a tripartite partner in Singapore’s growth and development.

To mark this truly momentous date Young NTUC will gather over 10,000 people to return to the very spot where the first historic shouts of Merdeka were uttered. This year’s key program highlight is the lighting of candles by all our participants before reciting the pledge. A large state flag will be unfurled on stage by our performers, hence forming a picture of a flag surrounded by a sea of candle lights.

The lighting of the candles signifies that every single member of the Labour Movement contributed to the building of our nation. The passing of the flame to help light someone else’s candle is also a special gesture, demonstrating the unwavering support within the Labour Movement.
